US Faces War Powers Deadline Amid Iran Ceasefire Dispute
A crisis exists for the U.S. government regarding its war against Iran. According to the War Powers Resolution, the president must receive Congressional consent after engaging in military action for 60 days. According to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, due to the ceasefire, the 60-day clock has been put on hold. Critics and legal authorities have stated that this does not apply in case of a temporary ceasefire since the U.S. is engaged in a blockade of Iran's port, which amounts to hostilities. Even though the government says that the war has ended, Democrats have stated that without a peace agreement and Congressional consent, the war will be illegal beyond the Friday deadline.
